A mini container lorry carrying cooking oil and flour from Mysore was en route to Coimbatore via Mettupalayam-Ooty hill road. The bonnet of the lorry suddenly caught fire when it was crossing the second hairpin bend near Kallar. The fire then spread to the entire lorry, but no casualties were reported as the driver and cleaner of the lorry immediately got down.
The Mettupalayam fire brigade fought for an hour to put out the blaze.
The fire destroyed several lakhs worth of food items. The fire caused a traffic snarl for an hour.
