Pumpsets, which fall under the category of essential products (both domestic and agricultural use) have a huge market in India and across the world. Presently, the size of the world pumpset market is 50 billion US dollars.
Tamilnadu and Gujarat are the major pump manufacturers in India. Coimbatore in Tamil nadu and Rajkot and Ahmedabad in Gujarat are the places where many pumpset manufacturers function.
The COVID lockdown hit the pumpset industry sector in a big way, but now the situation is slowly turning around since demand has started to increase in recent times.
President of Southern India Engineering Manufacturers Association(SIEMA) V.Krishna Kumar said, "The situation has started to change. We have started to witness good demand for pumps. Agriculture pumpset needs are increasing, but the major drawback for the industrialists is the disruption of the movement of industrial goods caused because of 'COVID-19' virus outbreak. Many states have suddenly implemented complete lockdowns. Previously, Karnataka implemented a full lockdown which has been relaxed from today.
Meanwhile Chhattisgarh has implemented a lockdown. It seems in a few days lockdown will also be implemented in Nagpur and various other places. These are just a few examples, which reveal the ground level difficulty which the industrialists are facing. Since the demand for pumps has started to increase, the central government should swing into action by ensuring that transportation of goods is not disrupted."
Director of Deccan Pumps Private Limited, Kanishka Arumugam said, "Indian pump industry's share in the world pump market is a little less than 2 billion US dollars. Like other sectors, the pump industry also faced the impact of the 'Covid-19' virus outbreak. When we had a complete lockdown implementation, sales went down for a whole month.
Pumps for domestic and agricultural use are sold through retail outlets. When the lockdown was in place, dealers were not able to open their stores and sell the products. The positive thing is there is a good demand for the pumps, but with many states implementing lockdowns, it is difficult to transport goods and products."
"Despite this, the future of the pump industry appears very good. Coimbatore district can become a global hub in pump manufacturing should it get competitive. We should produce world class quality pumps at competitive prices. If this happens, Make in India pumps will be recognised globally. Government is supporting the industries in a big way.
We hope the support will continue in the upcoming years also. Today the customer wants a product with GERMAN engineering, JAPANESE quality, and ITALIAN finish at CHINESE price. So Indian industrialists should work on being globally competitive in cost, quality and delivery", he added.
