In 2019, the qualifying exams for the grade II police took place and more than 20,000 people cleared. With just 8,538 vacancies filled, there is a shortage of cops in TN. Taking this into account, the Deputy CM O.Panneerselvam announced during the budget session that 10,000 vacancies in the police department will be filled up.
The candidates informed that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, conducting a written exam, a physical fitness exam and verification of certificates might be a challenge as the chance of the infection spreading to one another is quite high. Therefore they requested that the government should appoint all the candidates who cleared the final selection in 2019-2020, which also would cut some expenditure for the government.
Around 40 candidates who cleared the final selection exams of the TN Uniformed Services Commission in 2019 submitted a petition at the Tirupur District Collector's office to this effect.
They noted if this happens all that the government needs to do is conduct medical examinations for the selected candidates. They added that the government need not pay them salaries during the training period of six months, which would greatly help the government that is undergoing a financial crisis due to the pandemic.
