Following the 'tortured' custodial death of Sathankulam Jayaraj and Benix, social activists cited lack of transparency during police custody and investigation. They petitioned forums urging to make CCTV footages available at all police stations in TN.
Responding to the petition filed by Athisayakumar from Thoothukudi, the State Human Rights Commission, Chairman, Durai Jayachandran, has sent a notice to Home Secretary of Tamil Nadu and the DGP, regarding mandatory installation of surveillance cameras.
The notice has sought a viability report within four weeks from the department on installation of surveillance cameras and setting up of a control center to manage the footages.
