Coimbatore: Robots to clear underground sewerage canal blockages were inaugurated today by the Coimbatore Corporation, eliminating the need for manual cleaning.
Coimbatore:Robots to clear underground sewerage canal blockages were inaugurated today by the Coimbatore Corporation, eliminating the need for manual cleaning.
The underground sewage canals in Coimbatore total to 600 kms and cover more than 3,500 streets within the Coimbatore Corporation.
These sewerage lines experience blockages quite often and the Corporation Administration uses lorries that have equipment to clear the blockages, but it has only a limited number of such vehicles. Also, these lorries are used to send a human inside the 'manholes' and use high pressure to clear the block.
A private company launched a robot to clear the blockages in underground sewerage canals and also to remove human wastes. Last November one of these robots worth Rs.36 lakhs was procured by a private organisation and handed over to the Coimbatore Corporation. This robot was used for the first time near the Uppilipalayam signal.
Following this, Bharat Petroleum presented five latest robots worth Rs.2.12 crores on July 17 to the Coimbatore Corporation in the presence of Minister S.P. Velumani. These robots are to be used for clearing underground sewerage blockages. These robots were today. While the canals are 26 feet deep, the robots can be used to clear blockages at a depth of 30 feet.
Speaking about this a Corporation official said, "Special training has been offered to operate the robots. The robots can be parked near a manhole and the wires attached to its arm will be sent down the hole. The screen on the upper part of the robot can be used for viewing the area that has been blocked and the machine can be used accordingly to clear the blockage swiftly. Further, the robot can extract the waste that causes the blockage."
