The eagerness that the Anganwadi children have expressed in learning through this method has overjoyed the workers.
Anganwadi centers are being operated under the Department of Social Welfare's Integrated Child Development Project. There are 1,697 Anganwadi centers in Coimbatore and children between 2 and 5 years are admitted here.
The Anganwadi centers maintain the children from 10 AM to 4 PM. Families where both the parents are employed are mainly dependent on these Anganwadi centers to take care of their children. They prove very useful for the working parents. Nearly 1.5 lakh children study at these Anganwadi centers.
Basic education, physical activities and games are provided to the children here and the parents are made aware and educated about bringing up their children in a healthy and hygienic way
However, the lockdown that was enforced from March 24, due to the spread of COVID-19, has halted the children from coming to the Anganwadi centers. To continue providing education to the children, WhatsApp groups have been formed by the Anganwadi workers. Through these groups, they have been educating the children since April.
The children have also been expressing a great interest and eagerness to learn, making this a welcome move among the parents, informed the Anganwadi workers.
Speaking about this the Integrated Children's Development Project District Officer Meenatchi said, "To ensure that the children do not forget learning and to help them keep in touch with learning during the lockdown, WhatsApp groups have been formed through the Anganwadi centers and children have been receiving continuing education. Children are very eager to learn through this method."
