The COVID-19 treatment center at the Lawrence school in Ooty became operational from Monday. More than 50 COVID-19 patients are being treated at the school. However, in such a short span of time, complaints have been voiced that the PPE kits that are used by health care personnel are not being disposed of properly. They have been let to lie around in the open and cases where they have been dragged into the forests by monkeys have also been witnessed.
Confirming these complaints, the COVID-19 treatment center in the school was spotted with PPE kits lying around without being disposed of in the prescribed manner.
A group of monkeys were also spotted dragging the used PPE kits, medicine boxes and syringes into forest areas causing shock and disbelief.
Due to the highly contagious nature of Coronavirus, there is a higher chance of the disease spreading to others through these discarded items. Social activists have therefore stressed that the District Administration must take action for the proper disposal of used PPE kits.
When the District Health Assistant Director was contacted he informed that no complaints of such nature were received. However, he assured to look into the issue and initiate an inquiry.
