Kovai Gnani, the original pioneer of Tamil Marxism, has authored 28 review books, 11 anthologies, 5 volumes of essays and 3 books of poetry. He has won several awards including Puthumai Pithan Vilakku Award (1998), Canada Tamil Ilakkiya Thotta Iyal Award (2010), and Parithimar Kalaignar Award (2013) presented by the SRM University Tamil Forum. The multi-faceted Kovai Gnani was the greatest personality in the world of Tamil studies till his last breath.
Kovai Gnani passed away this morning in Coimbatore due to old age and ill health. Many scholars, professors, writers and journalists took to social media spaces to pay their last respects.
His given name is K. Palanisamy and his pseudonym is Gnani. He was born on July 1, 1935 in Somanur, Coimbatore to Krishnasamy and Mariammal. He was educated in a rural environment. He studied Tamil Literature at Coimbatore and Annamalai University. He lost his sight due to diabetes and retired voluntarily. He has been in poor health since 1988 and has been reading and writing with an assistant. He lived a full life through his contributions to Tamil literature. His wife M. Indrani who worked as a physical education teacher passed away in 2012 at the age of 75, due to cancer.
They have two sons, Parivallal and Madhavan. Both are expert cinematographers. He has written more than 25 books from a Marxist perspective using his erudition in ancient and contemporary Tamil literature. He published books on Marxism and the philosophy of religion. From the outset, he was closely associated with the Tamil Sitrithal Movement and was associated with the Marxist magazine New Generation (1968-70) and also the Vanambadi movement. He published the magazines such as Parimaanam (1979-83), Nigal (1988-96), and Tamilneyam (1998-2012) in collaboration with friends.
He had good relations with the veterans like SS Chellappa, KNS and with the eminent Tamil writers like Ashokamitran, Indira Parthasarathy, Sundara Ramasamy, Venkat Saminathan, Pramil, Ponneelan, etc. He studied Marxism with stalwarts such as SN Nagarajan, SV Rasathurai, and Pulavar Adi. Messages condoling his death are pouring in from various quarters.
