Coimbatore: As the southwest monsoon intensified over the last few days across Coimbatore district, 602 mm of rain was recorded in a single day yesterday.
Coimbatore has been surrounded by clouds since yesterday afternoon. In many areas around Coimbatore - areas like Valparai, Sethumadai, Pollachi, Kinathukkadavu, Chettipalayam, Karamadai, Periyanayakanpalayam and Mettupalayam, rains which started last evening have received rain till early morning today.
There was water stagnation in various parts of the district. In particular, roads in various parts of the suburbs, including Karamadai, Periyanayakanpalayam and Mettupalayam, were flooded. Within the Corporation limits, many areas where the roads have not been laid like in Bharathipuram, Sowripalayam and other areas where work is underway for smart city projects have had severe slush.
Due to the intensification of the southwest monsoon, the water level in Siruvani and Noyyal River has increased. As a result, Minister SP Velumani had said yesterday that water supply would be streamlined to once in every 6 days shortly.
