COVID-19: New high of 4,979 new cases today; State tally crosses 170,000

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu on Sunday reported its highest single day spike in COVID-19 infections the total infection count crossing 1.70 lakh.

As many as 4,979 new positive cases of coronavirus were reported from different parts of the state on Saturday, even as 4,059 people were discharged after recovery.

With the addition of the new COVID-19 cases, the infection count has gone up to 1,70,693.

The state saw 78 fatalities over the last 24 hours pushing the number of deaths to2,481.

Today's recoveries of 4,059 pushed those discharged after treatment to 1,13,856. Active cases stand at 50,294.

Keeping in line with the current trend of 100 plus new cases a day, Coimbatore posted 135 cases today. While The Nilgiris registered a whopping 78, Tirupur recorded 45 cases.

Chennai posted 1,254 positives today while its neighbouring districts of Thiruvallur (405), Chengalpattu (306) and Kancheepuram (220) collectively registered 931 cases.

Meanwhile, the situation continues to remain grim down south. At 265 and 206 new cases, respectively, Virudhunagar and Madurai were the major contributors.

Elsewhere in the state, the districts of Dindigul, Kallakurichi, Ramanathapuram, Theni, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Trichy and Vellore, among others, registered high numbers today.
