Culprit who vandalised Coimbatore temples nabbed; He does not belong to any organization - Commissioner of Police

Coimbatore: Coimbatore: The man who was searched in connection with the July 18 vandalisation and arson attack on three temples in Coimbatore has been arrested, the Coimbatore City Commissioner of Police said.

"The special force team from Coimbatore police have nabbed Gajendran (48) in connection with the incidents where he set ablaze used tyres and threw them into three temples in Coimbatore. It is to be noted that he does not belong to any organisation or political party," tweeted Coimbatore City Commissioner of Police, Sumith Sharan.

Tense moments prevailed in and around Coimbatore after Mahaliamman Temple at Town Hall, Vinayagar Temple in front of the Railway Station and Selva Vinayagar Temple at Nallampalayam were vandalised yesterday. It also seemed that the temples were tried to be razed.

Pro-Hindu outfits took to streets in large numbers and protested in condemnation of these incidents. They also announced that a large-scale protest would be conducted tomorrow.

Coimbatore police formed six special teams on the orders of City Commissioner of Police Sumit Charan to investigate the incident and nab the perpetrator.

Under these circumstances, CCTV footage from the areas was subjected to intense scrutiny and the police unearthed the information that the miscreant is Gajendran hailing from Salem and he has gone into hiding. His family members, relatives and friends were subjected to thorough interrogation.

As a result of intense search efforts, the special team sleuths have arrested Gajendran now.
