Deserted Mettupalayam-Ooty Railroad - The new feeding place for elephants!

Coimbatore: The Nilgiri Mountain Railroad lies deserted for more than two months now and sports an overgrowth of shrubbery and grass. Due to this, elephants have camped on the track in large numbers for some time now.

The jumbos that usually roam on the Coonoor-Mettupalayam road take refuge on the mountain railway track from time to time due to the availability of food in plenty. When encountering rains, the elephants find shelter in the many tunnels on the railroad and if the weather turns sunny, they move around with their cubs.

Also, when Forest Department personnels drive away the elephant herds that frequent the Coonoor-Mettupalayam, they saunter in the deserted railroad.
