Ukkadam police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
Meanwhile, investigation of CCTV footage revealed an unidentified person setting fire to a tyre and throwing it into the Mahaliamman temple in the town hall area.
In a similar incident, an unidentified person set a tyre ablaze in front of the Selva Vinayaga temple at Nallampalayam. Also another incident on the same lines happened at the Lord Vinayagar temple near Coimbatore railway station.
Following the vandalisation of a Periyar statue in Sundarapuram yesterday, a statue of Periyar in Thirukovilur was garlanded with sandals. These incidents created a furore in the state and protests are galore across the state.
The vandalisation of the temples has happened on the heels of the arrest of Arun Krishnan, a Bharat Sena functionary, in connection with the Sundarapuram misdemeanour. It has been reported that pro-Hindu organizations will be conducting protests in Coimbatore today.
