Tense moments prevailed at Sundarapuram area on Friday morning, after some miscreants poured saffron paint on a Periyar statue here.
Following this, Periyarists raised slogans demanding immediate action against the unidentified persons who poured saffron paint on the statue. The police arrived at the scene and sent them away.
Under the circumstances, MDMK cadres protested in front of the MDMK head office demanding strict action against those who vandalised the Periyar statue.
The Communist Party of India and the Dravidar Kazhagam have also announced protests.
