There is a daily mountain train service from Mettupalayam to Ooty. The mountain rail, which has been in operation for over 120 years, is unique in being powered by a steam engine. Due to its antiquity, the train was declared as a World Heritage Site.
The 15th anniversary of this recognition was held at Mettupalayam. The steam engine parked at the railway workshop was decorated following which railway officials offered sweets to the railway staff and officials present.
