The Mother and Child Care Ward of Coimbatore GH witnesses a constant inflow of expectant mothers from various districts including Coimbatore, The Nilgiris, and Tirupur. It is customary for the relatives and attenders of the patients admitted here to wait in the vicinity of the ward.
Into such a gathering in the vicinity entered a woman with a 3-month-old baby, around 12:30 PM this afternoon. After remaining seated with the baby for some time, the woman handed over the baby to a lady nearby on the pretext of answering nature's call.
When the mother did not return up until 3:30 p.m., the lady who assumed care of the baby and her relatives sensed something was amiss and carried the little one to the Police Outpost in the GH premises and narrated the sequence of events.
The infant who remained calm until that point started weeping too following which the Police intimated the GH administration, who admitted the baby at the hospital.
The Race Course Police have registered a case against the unidentified lady for abandoning the infant and absconding thereafter. On the first phase of police enquiry, it has been concluded that the lady in question could be someone from the Chinniampalayam area. Investigation of CCTV footage is also on.
The plight of a child weeping and yearning for its absconding mother has caused a great deal of sorrow in the area.
