In the third such incident this month, Kerala Police seized banned gutkha and tobacco products at the Walayar Check Post, this time from a vehicle with permission to transport knitwear waste to Kerala.
Readers may recall that police have twice thwarted attempts to smuggle hawala money to the tune of 2 crores following which security measures have been tightened on both the sides of the State border.
Under the circumstances, Kerala Police under suspicion stopped a load vehicle carrying a huge load of gunny bags containing knitwear waste.
The driver of the vehicle gave irrelevant statements as police questioned him. On suspicion, cops opened the bundles and found banned gutkha products inside.
The cops identified the driver as Zainulabudin from Coimbatore. The driver has been arrested. An inquest is on. Police officials say the seized gutkha products could be 15 lakh worth.
