Coimbatore: The Pollachi-Valparai Road is a densely forested area under the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve. It's a place that's abundant with wildlife such as leopard, deer, tiger and Nilgiris Tahr. The Aliyar Dam is located on this road.
Following the heavy rain in the Western Ghats of this area, a herd of elephants left the forest and camped in the forest area adjoining the Aliyar Dam.
Six elephants, four adult and 2 cubs are roaming the Valparai Road in the Navamalai residential area and Chinnarpathy hill station residential area adjacent to the dam.
As per the order of the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve Assistant Field Director, the forest department and anti-poaching guards led by Forest Ranger Kasilingam are engaged in intensive surveillance on a rotational basis to prevent them from entering the villages.
Kasilingam advised that the public going to Valparai from the Aliyar check post should not disturb the wild elephants and would be severely punished if found violating the norms.
