The curfew has been in effect in Tamil Nadu since March 24, since when civilians have lost their jobs, lost their income, and have no access to food. In this case, the RBI and the government have ordered that the self-help groups and farmers should not be harassed by private banks and finance companies to repay their loans.
In defiance of that order, Bajaj Finance, HDB Accounting, Equitas, L&T and other private financial institutions have now come forward to collect the loan with multiple interest rates. There is a continuum of abuses against women who are alone in the house by sending goondas in the name of collection to every house.
With police not bothering to initiate action against such companies, the licenses of such private companies that harass the poor should be revoked, said the Satta Urimai Neethi Paathukaapu Sangam.
