Coimbatore: The Avinashi-Athikadavu project has been the dream of many in Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode districts for the past 60 years. Work has been geared up so as to complete the project by 2021.

The project is executed at a cost of Rs.1,652 crores and will help a lot of water bodies including lakes, ponds fill up with the Bhavani water. Additionally, the Kousika River ponds and lakes would also benefit from this scheme.

The Project Superintendent Engineer Sivalingam said, "This project has been planned in a manner to benefit the drought hit areas in Coimbatore, Erode and Tirupur districts. Once the project is executed, 1.5 TMC of excess water from the Kalingarayan dam on the Bhavani river will be pumped out to benefit 24,468 acres of land, through the 32 PWD lakes, 42 Town Panchayat lakes and 971 ponds.

The process of land acquisition for six water pumping stations has been completed. The project for provision of solar power supply to the pumping stations has also been accelerated."

We sought more information regarding this from the Kousika river Coordinator Selvaraj, who said, "The natural resources of Coimbatore will increase manifold through this project. The Avinashi-Athikadavu project will also enrich the Kousika river and its associated water bodies. Many numbers have been provided to the people and work has been accelerated.

Based on those numbers, people should come forward and construct check dams in water bodies, raise pond and lake bunds, repair check dams, remove thorny trees and undertake renovations. This project is marching towards completion by December 2021. The District Administration, PWD, and water activist groups are working in conjunction. There is a need for all of us to join together and work towards protecting our water resources."
