India Tiger Census makes it to Guinness Book of World Records

Coimbatore: Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javedkar announced India's 2018 Tiger Census has made it to the Guinness Book of World Records for being the world's largest on-camera wildlife survey.

Coimbatore: Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javedkar announced India's 2018 Tiger Census has made it to the Guinness Book of World Records for being the world's largest on-camera wildlife survey.

Minister Prakash Javadekar reacted to the accomplishment and said that the aim to double the numbers was achieved four years before target.

The results of 2018 had shown that India now has an estimated 2,967 tigers out of which 2,461 individual tigers have been photo captured on camera traps, a whopping 83 per cent of the tiger population, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the survey.

Per this census, India is home to nearly 75 percent of the global tiger population.

Cameras with motion sensors were mounted at 26,838 places. These cameras recorded a whopping 3,48,58,623 pictures of the wildlife passing by.

Because of the dense forests in Tamil Nadu, Tiger sightings are rare. Therefore, an indirect census helps a lot where various factors such as animal excreta, footprints, dentition marks left on prey, nail marks on barks of trees, etc are taken into account. On top of this the camera traps help in calculation of the number of tigers, their age and sex. It takes up to six months to collate the data.
