Coimbatore: Just a few days after Rs.1.25 crores of hawala money was seized at the Walayar checkpost, the cops from the very same spot apprehended two men carrying Rs.46 lakhs.
Sampath Kumar (42) from Eachanari and Balamuruga Gurusamy from Kempatti Colony were stopped at the Walayar check post by the sleuths from Kerala Narcotics Prevention Division during a vehicular check today.
During inspection, the cops found Rs.16 lakhs stashed under one of the seats of the goods vehicle that Sampath Kumar was travelling in. However, when they checked Balamuruga Gurusamy's vehicle they could find anything.
Suspecting foul play, the police subjected Balamuruga Gurusamy to a close scrutiny and found that his shirt had a ballooned appearance. When probed further, it was found that his shirt had several pockets and Rs.30 lakhs were hidden in them.
When enquired, the duo said that they were on their way to Thrissur to buy a tractor. Unconvinced by their replies, the Kerala Narcotics cops handed them over to Walayar Police who confiscated the money and began an inquest into the matter.
While many lament that there is a dearth of money during these testing times because of the onset of COVID and the resultant lockdown, the capture of nearly 2 crores at the Walayar check post, has raised a few eyebrows. As a result, the vehicular checks at the TN-Kerala border have been intensified.
