This buildup to more recoveries than new cases has been happening for the last few days. It is to be seen if this is a one-off or a trend but the fact that Chennai is reporting lesser infections per day is one of the major reasons for this. The numbers recorded over the last 24 hours, released on Friday, are substantially lower than the new cases reported in the 24-hour period ending Thursday afternoon.
However, the number of COVID fatalities reported on Friday, 64, (17 private, 47 government) was comparable to the 65 deaths reported on Thursday.
On the brighter side, the total number of recoveries increased to 82,324 with a record 4,163 discharges on Thursday, the highest ever single-day tally of recoveries so far.
Even though the overall pandemic situation in Chennai, where the total registered COVID cases are nearing the 75,000 mark, continues to remain grim, Chennai recorded a much lower number of 1,205 positives today followed by 242 and 219 fresh positive cases from the nearby districts of Chengalpattu and Thiruvallur, respectively, said the Health Department release.
Besides Madurai, which has been showing a rise in COVID numbers for quite some time, prompting the government to continue the total lockdown, a few more Southern districts keep showing worrisome daily surges in infections. On Friday, Thoothukudi 194 new cases, Virudhunagar 143 new cases, Tirunelveli 141 cases, and Kanyakumari 75 cases.
While Tirupur District recorded 23 fresh cases taking the overall COVID tally to 288, The Nilgiris registered 13 new positives as a result of which the total of positives in district soared to 181.
