Thangaraj, 56, a resident of Ammankulam Housing Board near Puliyakulam, Coimbatore lives with his wife Kamalammal (51). Thangaraj's mother-in-law, Kaliyammal also resides with them. It is said that Thangaraj is an alcoholic who was in an extramaritalaffair with his wife's cousin, which led to frequent disputes between the couple.
Yesterday, he returned home after work in an inebriated state and got into an argument with his wife and mother-in-law, which later turned into a scuffle. An enraged Thangaraj, poured kerosene over his wife and set her on fire. He did the same to Kaliyammal who came to her daughter's rescue.
Thangaraj fled from the house following this. On hearing the cries of the mother and daughter, neighbours rushed in and rescued them. On witnessing the severe burns that the duo had, the rescuers sent them to Coimbatore GH.
Meanwhile, failing to respond to treatment, Kamalammal succumbed to her injuries today. Her mother Kaliammal is undergoing intensive treatment.
Ramanathapuram police registered a murder case against Thangaraj. He was later produced at Coimbatore Court and imprisoned at the Central Jail.
The incident caused quite a stir in the area.
