Coimbatore: MLA N.Karthik urged provision of COVID-19 lockdown relief for workers in unorganised sectors such as goldsmiths, construction workers, and daily wage workers who struggle without work since March 24, 2020, when the lockdown was announced.
Coimbatore: MLA N.Karthik urged provision of COVID-19 lockdown relief for workers in unorganised sectors such as goldsmiths, construction workers, and daily wage workers who struggle without work since March 24, 2020, when the lockdown was announced.
He said the workers have been pushed below the poverty line since they are not able to find jobs even after May 7th when the government allowed reopening of factories with 50% workforce.
More than 70% of these people live in rented houses and depend on daily wages for their livelihood. With no jobs available, their families are being subjected to poverty and stress, he lamented.
He said the city of Coimbatore has 30,000 families that are connected directly and indirectly with the gold industry. The government announced that only those who are registered with the Welfare Department will be given Rs 1000 per month, causing frustration amid the workers, but renewal of memberships and recruitment of new members is being inordinately delayed.
Therefore, MLA N.Karthik urged thatCoimbatore workers employed in the unorganised sector should be paid a total relief fund of Rs. 20,000 for the last 4 months. He said that home-based goldsmiths also should be taken into account by the government and be provided with interest-free loans through banks.
He urged the District Collector to consider the above demands and take immediate action to help clear the grievances of unorganised sector workers.
