Coimbatore: Public are gripped by fear due to a lone elephant that has been moving about in residential areas and damaging crops in agricultural lands.
The elephant is said to roam the foothill villages of Odanthurai, Kurumbanur, Dasampalayam and Samayapuram areas under the Mettupalayam Forest Reserve at night and damage agricultural crops such as banana and coconut trees.
This being the case, the movement of the elephant was increasingly seen in AKS Colony, near Odanthurai, on the Mettupalayam-Coonoor Road.
The Forest Department personnel were alerted about this who arrived at the scene. The burst firecrackers for hours together and managed to drive the elephant into a wooded area.
The residents in the area urged the officials to initiate action to drive the wild elephant, which has been troubling them for more than a month, into a thick forest area.
