Coimbatore: DIG Narendran Nair met with the sub-inspectors and other police officers from the district at the PSG Arts and Science College. The District Superintendent of Police, T. Sujit Kumar, IGP, ADSP's, DSP's and sub-inspectors designated in Coimbatore District were present.

In the meeting, the DIG discussed the importance of goodwill between police and the public, the Supreme Court guidelines on making arrests and the rights of the arrested person.
He also urged the Tamil Nadu Police to abide by the guidelines that the State Police head has laid down, which include:
1. A FIR must be registered if, when and where curfew is violated. No one should be arrested for violation of curfew.
2. Arrests should be made only for serious/non-bailable offenses.
3. Police personnel should not engage in offensive behaviour and should not attack people unnecessarily.
4. The police should try to build rapport with the public. Widespread social participation must be encouraged and incorporated into policing.
5. When dealing with detainees, the police must take all precautionary measures to avoid violence.
6. There should not be any compromise in providing information to the district head and senior officials.
7. The police should adopt a humanitarian/compassionate approach toward the public during curfew. The DSP and ASP should keep in touch with the officials under them through reiterating the do's and don'ts and sending them the relevant and recent circulars.
In addition, he said the instructions and protocols provided should be logged in their handbooks and the officers in charge of stations should check the entries regularly and ensure that they are being followed.
