A special loan of Rs.10,000 was announced to the roadside vendors by the TN government to help them through the lockdown crisis. There are more than 6,000 registered roadside vendors and more than 12,000 unregistered roadside vendors within the Coimbatore Corporation.
Due to the loss of livelihood of these vendors during the COVID-19 lockdown, the TN government announced a bank loan of Rs.10,000. However the lack of guidelines regarding the loan has led many questions - how to obtain the special loan and was it planned to be issued? Whom to contact? Where to obtain the application? Roadside vendors complain that the lack of clear guidelines has left them in the lurch.
President of Roadside Vendors Welfare Association Mani said, "Roadside vendors all over Coimbatore have been affected by the pandemic and the scenario for us has become a question of life or death. With this being the case, banks have been ignoring us when we approach them for the Rs.10,000 loan.
They have notified us that they have not received any announcements. Petitions have been filed with the District Administration and the Corporation too. However, there are no updates yet. Since there are no guidelines to secure the loan, the roadside vendors have not been able to utilise the scheme and are still struggling."
He added, "A committee should be formed immediately to issue the guidlines to provide loans to us."
