Coimbatore: The vendors of the city's old flower market are delighted as a new market just opposite the existing one is on its final leg of construction. District administration, under the auspices Minister SP Velumani, is going all gears to complete the new building within a week.

Coimbatore: The vendors of the city's old flower market are waiting with expectation as a new market just opposite the existing one is on its final leg of construction. District administration is going all gears to complete the new building in a short span.

The building will have a total of 140 shops with a square footage of 36 each.

All the shops will have steel shutters in place as opposed to the old ones which have just 20 feet of sitting space with no physical partitions or doors whatsoever. The building that is being constructed is all set to be inaugurated within a week say sources.

Of note, the old market displayed blatant disregard for social distancing, in the context of pandemic, from the parts of both vendors and customers. Many opine the main reason for this is the paucity of space in the market as a result of which it had been temporarily moved to the Devanga School campus.

Sporting more space, the new market will bring ease to sellers and buyers alike. Public opine that if authorities provide a parking space, it will be an added advantage.

Coimbatore is traditionally a huge commercial hub for flowers as the market here caters to flower growers from 9 districts and more than sixteen types of flowers come to and leave from the stalls. The type of jasmine that has been fondly christened as 'gundu malli' by flower aficionados is one of the specials of the market.
