A female elephant that was found dead in the Sirumugai Bhavani water reservoir forest area may have died due to ill health, informed tthe Forest Department.
Coimbatore:A female elephant that was found dead in the Sirumugai Bhavani water reservoir forest area may have died due to ill health, informed the Forest Department.
The forest department workers were involved in patrolling in the Moolaiyur region within the Sirumugai Forest near Bhavanisagar Water catchment areas near Mettupalayam.
When they approached Mayilmokkai region, a water catchment area of the Bhavani dam, they were struck by a foul odour. When the forest department workers investigated the cause for this and searched the area, the carcass of a female elephant in a decaying state was found lying.
This information was passed on to higher authorities of the department who then conducted an investigation. A medical team led by the Forest veterinarian Dr. Sugumar conducted an autopsy.
Following this, they revealed that the female elephant might have expired eight to 10 days ago. Its organs have totally rotten and disintegrated. They further noted that the animal might have died due to ill health. The medical team then took some organs of the animal for further studies. Rest of the mortal remains of the tusker was left as it was for other carnivores to feed on.
