On March 13, 2016, Shankar and Kousalya were attacked by mercenaries while coming out of the Udumalpet bus terminal and Shankar succumbed to injuries.

A total of 11 people were arrested, including Kausalya's father, mother, her cousins and mercenaries for the murder. Three, including Kausalya's mother Annalakshmi, were acquitted and six others, including her father, were sentenced to death.

Judge Alamelu heard the case in Tirupur court and gave a verdict in a very short span. On behalf of the state, an appeal was made against the release of three members, including Kausalya's mother.

Those who were sentenced to death appealed to the high court. In the verdict issued on those appeals today, Kausalya's father Chinnasami has been released from the case. In addition, the death penalty for the other five has been reduced to life imprisonment.

Moreover, the government's petition against the release of the trio, including Mother Annalakshmi, has been dismissed. The Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front urged the Tamil Nadu government to immediately appeal to the Supreme Court with strong and credible evidence.

To emphasize this, the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front has decided to hold a demonstration on behalf of the Marxian, Daliti and Periyarist organizations on Tuesday (23.6.2020) at 10.30 AM in front of the Tirupur District Collectorate.
