Coimbatore: Seasonal fruit mangosteen is being harvested in plenty at the Kallar Horticulture farm in Mettupalayam. However, the sale of fruits has been affected due to the lack of tourists.
The Kallar Horticulture farm at Mettupalayam cultivates fruits of many rare varieties including mango, durian, jackfruit and mangosteen. These fruits are sold at nominal rates at the farm.
The season for mangosteen, a native fruit of Malaysia, has now begun at the farm. The 140 trees at the farm are full of mangosteen fruits. The glucose-rich fruits are in season during the months of June, July and August. The tender for the sale of these fruits has been given out by the government and the sale of fruits has begun.
While the fruit harvest was lesser last year, this year they were expected to go for higher prices. However, due to the impact of COVID-19 and the ban on tourism, the sale of mangosteen has taken a hit. A kilogram of the fruit is being sold for Rs.200 to 300.
