Coimbatore: In a welcome move, the retail fish market functioning at Ukkadam By-pass Road will down its shutters on Sundays. The traders in the market have jointly arrived at this decision.
The District Administration has been enforcing the use of face masks and the maintenance of social distancing at all places. It has also issued warning that those who do not observe these guidelines will be acted upon severely.
Under these circumstances, the traders at the retail fish market on the Ukkadam By-Pass road have decided to close down the fish market on Sundays in a bid to stop the Sundary rush when crowds throng the market, risking the chance of COVID-19 infection.
The traders said, "68 shops are in operation at the retail fish market. Fish from Kerala, Kanyakumanri, Rameshwaram and Thoothukudi are sold here in retail. Nearly 50 to 100 kgs of fish are sold at the market everyday. On Sundays, the sale is much higher and the crowds of people who throng the market is huge. This being the case, considering the welfare of the people, the traders at the market have decided to stop the sale of fish on Sundays as a preventive measure to not increase the spread of COVID-19. On other days, barricades will be placed to maintain social distancing among the people who visit the market."
