Coimbatore: Minister S.P. Velumani has ordered the officials to seal shops that do not maintain social distancing norms and to penalise the public who step out without wearing face masks.
At a COVID-19 prevention strategy meeting held at the District Collectorate today, the Minister for Municipal Administration S.P. Velumani ordered authorities to take action against those violating the COVID-19 prevention guidelines.
He informed that, "Our state is conducting the highest number of COVID-19 testing in India. 2,094 isolation beds and 387 ventilators are on the ready at ESI hospital, Government Medical College Hospital and private hospitals. At ESI hospital, with 149 doctors, 112 nurses and 621 other medical staff, a total of 882 staff members have been divided into three teams and are functional 24 hours a day."
He further said, "Those arriving from foreign countries, other states and districts are put through testing at the airports and the check posts. Those in contact with the passengers are also being subjected to testing. People with infection are identified with the motive to stop new persons from getting infected. Monitoring and testing is done as a precautionary measure and it is being carried out extensively."
"While the number of cases has gone up to 211, 161 people have recovered and gone back home, on;y 48 are currently undergoing treatment", he said.
Talking about transport, he said, "Transport within the zones iis being permitted with certain rules. Teams have been formed to monitor those who enter Coimbatore with permission. Those arriving into the district via flights are being tested for COVID-19 and are recommended to be quarantined."
"Post the lockdown relaxation, 89 flights have entered Coimbatore and 10,929 passengers have arrived through them, 63 passengers have tested positive for COVID-19. A total of 28,380 people have been tested for COVID-19 in the district and 17,938 people who arrived from other districts have been quarantined so far", he informed.
"The public must wear face masks when they step out. Authorities have been ordered to penalise people without face masks in public places and to seal down shops not observing social distancing norms", he said.
