Farmers' Association pays tribute to farmers who sacrificed their lives in protest against hike in electricity tariff
Tirupur: Farmers' Association paid tribute on the 50th Memorial Day to farmers who sacrificed their lives in protest against hike in electricity tariff. In 1970, Coimbatore jilla farmers engaged in a power reduction campaign to protest a hike of 1 paisa.
Ramaswamy, Marappan and Aai were killed in the police firing. A marble memorial (Veerakkal) was established in Perumanallur, Tirupur district on 19.6.1971 in memory of the martyrs.
With today being the 50th anniversary of killings, various farmers' organizations are paying homage to the marble stone.
Farmers have demanded free electricity should be provided to them and any move against cancellation of the same should be quashed by the government.
