Coimbatore: Despite repeated warning public to wear face masks while people venture out, many are violating the norms by not doing so. In a time when the entire world is reeling under a pandemic, people should take up the responsibility of adhering to norms prescribed to avoid an outbreak, told the District Collector, on Thursday.

Health care professionals, sanitary workers, officials of various government departments including police, revenue, corporation, and health risk their lives and work round-the-clock in a coordinated manner to ensure there are no loopholes that could jeopardise the safety of the people, the Collector informed.

"In this unprecedented scenario, the task of breaking the chain of the virus spread can be achieved in our district only with the support of the people. Time and again, the government has been urging the people on the need to wear masks and how wearing masks can save us from the virus. Yet, it is disheartening to see people violating the norms", the Collector expressed.

"Hence, it was decided to impose a fine of Rs 100 on such violators. The Corporation has thus far collected a consolidated fine amount of Rs. 9.55 lakhs in the city limits. Going forward, stringent inspections will be held across the city to ensure people wear masks when they step out. Collective social responsibility is the need of the hour", reiterated the Collector at the review meeting held on Thursday at the District Collectorate with top officials of several departments.
