Coimbatore: DMK MLA N. Karthik demands immediate withdrawal of contract with Suez Corporation made for 26 years at the cost of 3,150 crores for providing drinking water in the city.
With the approval of the Minister SP Velumani, the contract for supply of drinking water to the areas of Coimbatore, the Corporation has paid Rs. 3,150 crores to Suez, a multinational corporation in France, which has been accused of various misdemeanours.
He said, when the announcement was made on 25.06.2018, their leader had vehemently opposed the granting of a drinking water contract to a private company for a period of 26 years.
He added that all the people in the party had registered their opposition. Moreover, several protests took place in Coimbatore on behalf of the DMK and its allies. However, the Coimbatore Administration has continued to implement the scheme despite the popular opposition.
Two years after the deal was signed, still the drinking water supply pipeline work remains unfinished. Many roads in the city of Coimbatore are filled with potholes, making it tough for a smooth traffic flow.
While new pipes are being laid after digging pits, the current water pipelines are being damaged which is followed by months of requests to repair it. He said, drinking water pipes in all parts of the city of Coimbatore are frequently damaged, broken, leaking and are not repaired for several days.
He said, the employees of the Suez Company, which currently manages the supply of drinking water, are messing up the supply of water and have left the damaged pipelines unattended.
He accused that due to the reckless attitude of Suez employees, there is a serious backlash in the supply of drinking water to all areas of the city, and the public is suffering from a lack of it.
He accused the concerned government department is worthless when people are facing difficulty for drinking water and he also accused Minister SP Velumani of notpaying attention to the problem despite being in the same city.
He also said, there has been a severe shortage of drinking water in the city of Coimbatore due to the failure of the Municipal Administration to do infrastructure work on the drinking water project for the last 9 years. He said, "Drinking water is only available to the public in various parts of Coimbatore once in 8 days, 15 days and sometimes 20 or 30 days. The Corporation of Coimbatore has consistently been indifferent to the drinking water supply, which is a basic need of the general public."
He accused the corporation of wasting people's tax money on this contract despite opposition from the public. Hence he demanded the immediate cancellation of the contract and necessary arrangements for seamless supply of water.
He also warned that if necessary action is not taken, his party will resort to protests with social distancing and other requiste norms in place.
