New brick kilns banned in Coimbatore
Coimbatore: Seven brick kilns started last year in the city has been ordered to shut down by the Revenue department and the Natural resources department.
Five brick kilns in Veerapandi and two brick kilns in Chinnathadagam that began operations last year have been banned henceforth. Over 180 brick kilns are operating in the five areas in the city such as Chinnathadagam, Veerapandi, Somayapuram, Nanjundapuram and Pannimadai.
Environmental activists complained that the brick kilns were violating government rules. Litigation for the ban of brick kilns is underway in the high court. Following this, revenue department officials and natural resources officials inspected the brick kilns.
