Woman with knife remaining pierced on chest for 30 hours undergoes successful treatment at the Coimbatore Government Hospital

In a logic-deying incident, a woman withstood a knife stab for 30 hours before she was treated at the Coimbatore GH, with the knife remaining pierced for the length of time.

Coimbatore: In a logic-deying incident, a woman withstood a knife stab for 30 hours before she was treated at the Coimbatore GH, with the knife remaining pierced for the length of time.

Malliga (40), a resident of Hosur was stabbed by someone on May 25 on her chest. She was immediately admitted to the Salem Government Hospital and later transferred to the Coimbatore GH for higher treatment, with the stabbed knife intact on her chest.

The knife had pierced six inches of her chest and only an inch of its handle was visible outside. However, on examination it was observed that none of the vital organs other than a small part of the lung had been injured in the incident.

Malliga was admitted as an in-patient in the Heart surgery department and an emergency surgery was decided to be conducted on her. Following this, the doctors undertook a surgery without affecting any of the other vital organs and removed the knife safely. The injury on the lung was also treated.

A team led by the head of the department of heart surgery conducted the procedure successfully and removed the knife that had been lodged in the woman's chest for 30 hours. Following recovery, the woman was discharged home.
