Coimbatore: Ward members in Nellithurai Panchayat boycotted the ward members' meeting and staged a protest demanding basic facilities for the tribal areas in Mettupalayam.
The Western Ghats near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore is home to many tribal villages. Some of the villages like Sengalur, Palikaadu and Ketthai do not have even the basic facilities of drinking water, good roads and streetlights. The Panchayat representatives informed the Nellithurai Panchayat Council President and a resolution was passed to improve the basic facilities in these villages in the first session. However, no action has been taken regarding this.
The Nellithurai Panchayat Council meeting was held at the Panchayat Council Office, led by President Selvi. However, the six ward members from the tribal areas boycotted this meeting and stepped out and staged a protest in front of the Council Office demanding that the promised facilities should be provided.
This caused a stir in the area. The ward members complained that in spite of repeated complaints, the Panchayat President has been taking autonomous decisions and always allocates the developmental tasks only to certain areas.
The Mettupalayam MLAO.K. Chinnaraj who came to attend the meeting spoke to the protesting members. He further assured them that drinking water, road and other basic facilities will be provided and that Rs.20 lakhs will be provided from the MLA's fund. Following, this the members gave up the protest and participated in the meeting.
