The 232 Birth Anniversary of John Sullivan, the Founder of Ooty, was celebrated today. The celebrations were led by the Nilgiris District Collector Innocent Divya.

Two hundred years ago, Nilgiris was not known to the outside world due to it being a mountain district.The Coimbatore District Collector at the time, John Sullivan, introduced this district to the world. He moved to the Nilgiris and built himself a bungalow in the Kannerimukku area near Kotagiri. He took additional charge as the Nilgiris District Collector and undertook various developmental measures. His bungalow now stands as memorial
Various constructions were held during his period and most of the summer festivals that take place in Ooty were started in the times of John Sullivan.
On his 232 birth anniversary, the District Collector Innocent Divya garlanded his statue and showered flowers. Sweets were distributed to the public.

District Collector Innocent Divya said, "The final leg of the construction of the John Sullivan Memorial Park will becompleted in two months", and further requested the public to wear face masks and maintain social distancing while stepping out. She further asked them to step out of their homes only when necessary.
People representing the Badaga community and tribals participated in the event.
