Tamilnadu Farmers' Association petitions Coimbatore Collector for prevention of water theft and removal of encroachments in Noyyal River
Coimbatore: Members of the Tamilnadu Farmers’ Association petitioned Coimbatore Collector for removal of encroachments on the water bodies to prevent water theft in the Noyyal river.
Members of the Coimbatore District Committee of the Tamilnadu Farmers’ Association led by the President of the Association S. Palanisamy submitted a petition to the District Collector.
In the petition they noted, "The TN government has recently allocated Rs.230 crores for the dredging works on Noyyal river. Farmers of TN and Tirupur are dependent on the water from Noyyal. Banks of the river are, however, filled with encroachments that disrupt the flow of water. Noyyal rehabilitation is also being carried out with the allocated funds.
Hence encroachments on the banks of the river must be cleared and the poor people residing on the banks of the river must be provided with alternate places to reside. A petition has been filed regarding this."
The petition particularly insisted on the removal of encroachments near the Narasipuram area on the banks of the Noyyal. It said that illegal bore wells were built and water theft is rife and insisted on action to prevent the theft.
