COVID-19: Sirmugai Silk manufacturers all set to sell sarees at manufacturing prices to bolster their Corona-hit business

In a bid to bolster their Corona-hit business silk manufacturers of Sirumugai are all set to begin selling sarees at manufacturing prices.

Tirupur: In a bid to bolster their Corona-hit business, silk manufacturers of Sirumugai are all set to begin selling sarees at manufacturing prices.

Sirumugai next to Mettupalayam, Coimbatore, is home to more than 5,000 handlooms. The looms here produce much-sought varieties such as kora cotton, soft silk, and wedding sarees, to name a few.

More than 10,000 individuals depend on the looms for their livelihood. With the COVID-19 lockdown in place, the weaver families here have been subjected to severe financial hardships and are struggling to make both the ends meet. On top of that, there had been steep declines in prices too, adding to their woes.

A meeting of the Sirumugai Handloom Weavers' and Sellers' Association took place today in order to discuss measures to counter the problems they face due to the lockdown and their repercussions.

Chaired by the association president Nagaraj, it was decided to enforce schemes to encourage the declining customers who have reduced their purchases to a large scale due to their diminishing buying capacities. In a bid to boost their ailing business, it was decided in the meeting to sell their products at manufacturing prices.

In accordance with the decisions taken, the weavers would be selling their products at manufacturing prices from June 15 to August 16, 2020. They believe this will help them rebuild their tottering industry and support families that have been financially bogged down by the lockdown.
