A BSNL tower has been non-functional for the past one year in Sandhana Malai of the Oveli town panchayat in Nilgiris district. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) submitted a petition to the Nilgiris District Collector requesting the tower be repaired.

The Oveli town panchayat has nearly 30,000 residents. There are 25,000 mobile phone connections and 200 landline connections present here. A BSNL tower had been set up at the Sandhanamalai area that had been functioning earlier.
However, for the past one year, the tower has not been dysfunctional. People in the area allege they get a scratchy cell phone service because of this and they are not able to make emergency calls for medical reasons resulting in loss of lives in some cases.
They said their children in schools and colleges have been left in a quandary due to this as classes are being proposed to be held online.
"Considering the welfare of the people, the BSNL tower should be repaired, for use by the public", stated the petition that was filed by the VCK with the Nilgiris District Collector Innocent Divya.
They also warned that a massive protest would be organised if the tower is not repaired.
