Public in Coonoor demand elephant herd camped in the vicinity be chased away
The Nilgiris: The public are in fear as a herd of elephants with calves camping in the area of Kilinchada on the Mettupalayam Road in Coonoor, Nilgiris District is causing damage to pear crops and keeps entering villages.
The number of wild elephants in the Nilgiris district has increased in the past few days. A few days ago, people in the area reported seeing elephants with calves on the roadside at Thuthurmattam near Coonoor.
On arrival at the scene, the forest department parked vehicles on both sides of the road and drove the elephants into the forest after an hour's struggle. People are worried as the pachyderms keep causing damage to pear farms in the Kilinchada area.
Residents of the area demand the elephants be chased into dense forests before any untoward incidents occur.
