Continuous rains increase waterflow to dams in Valparai

Coimbatore: Valparai witnessed the onset of the southwestern monsoon on June 1. Initially it was raining for a few days, but the weather turned sunny later.

Again, the area has been recording continuous rainfall for the past few days. Yesterday, 16 mm rain was recorded. Similarly, Solaiyar Dam has received 36 mm of rainfall, Chinnakallar 22 mm and the Neerar Dam 17 mm.

It has been raining sparsely since last night.

This has increased water flow in the Koozhangal river, Nadumalai river banks and streams. The 165-foot Solaiyar Dam has 51 feet of water as of this morning. It is to be noted that, last year, the water was just 5.76 feet high.

While the dam receives 75 cubic feet of water, no water has been let out so far. The rainy season has made the area very cold. Nevertheless, the workers in the tea gardens cover themselves in wool and are busy plucking tea leaves.
