The rescue of a 55-year-old woman who was left alone in the burial ground in Sundakkamuthur has shocked the citizens of Coimbatore. She was later left in the care of the Corporation Hostel by the Tamilnadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK).

The 55-year-old woman, Vijaya, was spotted at the burial ground in Sundakkamuthur for the past few months. She was a destitute abandoned by her relatives and was struggling for life. The residents of the area took pity on Vijaya and provided her with food but due to the pandemic, even this came to an end.
However, the residents still wanted to take care of Vijaya and spread word regarding her plight, which reached the ears of TMMK Coimbatore Medical Wing District Assistant Secretary Aashiq Ahmed.
Aashiq, along with a woman assisting him, went to the burial ground and gave the woman a haircut and tidied her up. She was later taken to the ESI hospital for COVID-19 testing.. After a great deal of effort, they managed to obtain permission from the District Administration to admit her into the Corporation Hostel.
While this incident has gained a lot of appreciation from the public, the new-age selfish lifestyle which limits itself to caring one's own children and family and shunning the parents when they get old has become a cause for concern.
The loving care that needs to be provided with the seniors is alarmingly on the decline as seen by the rise in the number of old age homes in Coimbatore despite it being a thriving industrial and business hub. While generally the old are abandoned on the roadsides and government hospitals, to the ire and dismay of many, Vijaya was left alone in a burial ground, of all places.
While the TMMK has been appreciated for its noble act, there is anger and disgust at the thought that someone could leave a helpless old woman at a burial ground to fend for herself. The need for stringent enforcement of the law to protect our seniors is a vital need of the hour, stress humanitarians.
