Coimbatore: Sleuths from Narcotics Information Bureau arrested a man smuggling 200 kgs of marijuana worth Rs.40 lakhs to Madurai.
Based on a tip off regarding a drug smuggling operation via Coimbatore, Tamilnadu Narcotics Information Bureau Additional Director Shakil Akhtar formed a police teamunder the supervision of the Narcotics Prevention Division Police Inspector Kalaiselvan and Narcotics Prevention Division Deputy Superintendent Vincent. The team comprised Police Inspector Saravanan, Vijayakumar and Mohanasundaram.
The NIB sleuths were conducting vehicular checks on the Thudiyalur-Saravanampatti road when the lorry with registration number TN60-AC 9965, driven by Parthasarathy (28) son of Pavunpaandi of Bethaniyapuram, Madurai was found to carry 200 kgs of marijuana, upon inspection. On investigation it was revealed that the lorry had carried iron rods and marijuana from Visakhapatnam. While the rods were unloaded at an iron shop in the Thudiyalur area, the marijuana was being transported to Madurai.
On the way to Madurai, the lorry was caught near Vellakinar and seized. The lorry driver was arrested and investigations are being conducted to find out who sold the voluminous drug load.
The value of the drug seized is approximately estimated at Rs.40 lakhs.
