Coimbatore: The TPDK paid tribute to the African-American, George Floyd, who was killed in an act of racism, in the USA.
On May 25, an African-American, George Floyd was killed by police officers, while he remained pinned to the ground beneath the police officers, unable to breathe. This incident took place in Minneapolis in the US state of Minnesota.
The video footage of the police officer pinning George Floyd, with his knees on Floyd's neck went viral on social media. It caused outrage among the public. Lakhs of people gathered on the streets to protest against this injustice. They demanded justice for the death of George Floyd and also protested against the discrimination African-Americans face in general. Demands for the change of jurisdiction was also placed.
A tribute to George Floyd was paid by the TPDK at the Periyar Padipagam in Gandhipuram, Coimbatore. Candles were lit and homage was paid on behalf of all the associations. The TPDK General Secretary K. Ramakrishnan, Aadhi Tamilar Peravai Founder Adhiyaman, Dravida Viduthalai Kazhagam Coimbatore District President Nehrudas, PUCL lawyer Balamurugan and others were present.
