Coimbatore: A wedding held at Vasavi Mahal wedding hall at Vysial street in Coimbatore on Wednesday has irked the people of the area, who allege that COVID norms were thrown to winds during the ceremony.

Citing that there were more than 50 people who attended the wedding, the public accuse that a majority of the people who attended the wedding did not wear face masks.

"Children and the elderly were seen without masks and no social distancing was maintained. Such incidents are shocking in the context of the growing number of coronavirus cases in the district over the last one week. These violations should be dealt strictly", they opine.

"Those without face masks can become potential carriers of the virus, they can infect hundreds of them at their offices and homes. Endangering the lives of others during such a pandemic time is a condemnable and shameful act", lamented a pregnant women.

"Not only are they exposing themselves but risking the lives of others, who have no connection with the ceremony. Such functions set bad examples and instigate others to conduct functions by violating the norms", a public from the area told.

Public have jointly appealed that corporation/district administration officials should continue to monitor the wedding halls to avoid such violations and hefty fines should be levied on the concerned people.

Activists opine that these kinds of weddings/functions that defy rules are disappointing, amongst nuptial ceremonies, which are being held in a simple manner with wedding funds ear-marked earlier for them being spent on COVID relief measures.
